Varese, land of experiences

The Flowering Coast - the Lombard side of Lake Maggiore

The entire Lombard side of Lake Maggiore runs from Sesto Calende to Locarno, Switzerland. The Lombard section is just over 60 km long and can be a taste of this side of Lake Maggiore.

From Sesto Calende one sets out in the direction of Angera, passing under the double-decker iron bridge that crosses over to the Ticino River. After passing the villages of Sant'Anna and Lisanza, you reach Angera above which the Borromeo Castle stands out. You leave the state highway in the direction of the town and skirt the entire promontory until Ranco. You then return to the state highway and continue in the direction of Laveno. After passing Ispra, with the EURATOM Center, Lido di Monvalle and Arolo di Leggiuno, you follow the signs for the Hermitage of S. Caterina del Sasso. Back on the state highway, you touch Reno di Leggiuno, Cerro di Laveno, Ceresolo and finally reach Laveno Mombello. After passing a tunnel, after a few kilometers you reach Castelveccana, with the Fortress of Caldè, and then Porto ValtravagliaGermignaga, and the nearby Luino. It continues always skirting the lake and arrives in Maccagno con Pino e Veddasca, the northernmost and longest-named municipality, and then from the Zenna pass one can continue into Swiss territory as far as the Piano di Magadino and Locarno.
